Coming up on May 20th…

BAXTER DURY, KIT RICHARDSON, THE BORDER SURRENDER
May 20th, The Old Queens Head (London)

Following April’s volcano wash out where we lost our line-up to acts stranded all around the globe, OIW comes back bigger and stronger on May 20th, and with less natural disasters! (hopefully). Here’s the sterling line-up for our next bash in the gorgeous surroundings of the Old Queens Head;

BAXTER DURY

Baxter Dury

We are more than a bit excited to be welcoming BAXTER DURY to the Oh! Inverted World stage, his dad might have been the legendary Ian Dury, but Baxter has been carving out a niche of his own and proven to be a brilliant lyricist and songwriter in his own right. After signing to Rough Trade Records he put out two simply amazing records, “Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift” (featuring collaborations with Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley, and Richard Hawley) and 2005’s excellent “Floor Show”. If you haven’t seen Baxter before then let us tell you that this will be something a little bit special.

KIT RICHARDSON

Kit Richardson

We will also have the wonderful KIT RICHARDSON on the bill, there always seems to be some reason or the other that this show hasn’t happened yet (volcanoes were just the last in the series), but FINALLY we are delighted to have Kit confirmed and along for the show. Her live shows are something to behold, and as a taster here’s a live version of “You Look So Good Tonight” to wrap your ears around;

THE BORDER SURRENDER

The Border Surrender

And if that wasn’t enough (it never is for you people!), we’re also bringing you the amazing THE BORDER SURRENDER to join us for the evening too! These guys are so on their way up it’s getting scary, and their tuneful Americana tinged music has been gathering momentum since they first hit the road in January. They released their debut EP in April to a packed crowd of nodding, knowing folk on Charlotte Street, and now they’re bringing their great live show to Oh! Inverted World.

It’s going to be damn good folks. We’ve also got the one and only MR DAVE DEPARES back on the decks to make everyone happy and drunk on music throughout the night. Get yourself down to this one and we’ll see you on May 20th! It’s only a fiver with a flyer too (coming soon)…

Facebook event and details HERE folks.

Mariner’s Children – It Carved Your Name Into The Ground

Woo, only a week to go before our great big OIW shindig down at The Old Queens Head (that’s Islington, London folks) on November 11th! We’ve already previewed our fantastic openers Player Piano, now here’s a taste of the super main support for the night… Mariner’s Children!

Mariner's Children kicking out the jams

These guys are something else, they just performed at the Roundhouse as part of the BBC Emerging Proms and are heading off for some dates with Peggie Sue following their appearance at OIW next week. Think along the lines of the dark, endearing qualities of The Decemberists with the earnest beauty of Cherbourg. Here’s a great track we’ve managed to get hold of from the guys, ‘It Carved Your Name Into the ground’.

Aw, it’s going to be great! And Treetop Flyers are also along to headline with Dave Depares flying back from the US (we like to think especially for the show) to fill your ears with wonderful sounds from the DJ booth all night. More details on the Facebook event HERE and your flyer to get in for a fiver is below, woo!

The Great Escape Festival – Great (ish?)

The Great Escape Festival – Brighton – 14th-16th May
lg_GreatEscape_2009

Ok, so ATP sounded pretty ridiculously awesome. Jealousy is cursing through my veins but back to the topic of TGE this year, I’d love to say I lived it like last year but this was not the case, a last-minute wrangled pass led to missing the first day, turning up in Brighton on a miserable Friday night (the rain was going sideways, yes sideways) and not a clue about where a bed for the night might be.

These are small details though, details that can only be resolved by blurring over the edges with booze and fine music. So, following a quick bottle of red wine and with no idea of who was playing and where, it was over to the Corn Exchange to swap soggy feet for whisky and coke. We caught up with the now legendary Inverted World DJ (and Journo / film maker) Dave Depares and Neil Henson, and debated Mumford & Sons as they earnestly played out their set on the Corn Exchange stage. There were ‘aight, but maybe it was just too late in the day for them, we needed harder stuff at this hour, something to stir the adrenaline and alcohol together into some furious concoction.

So we left for the pub across the road returning 20 minutes later for Metronomy. Things have changed with Metronomy, the giant lights they used to wear on their chests, gone. There’s now a drummer and bass player (one of which used to be with Lightspeed Champion someone yells at me). There’s also confusion,
“this isn’t Metronomy!”
“Yes it f*ing is!”
“No, it’s goddamn not”

Well, regardless of who it was (it actually was Metronomy) it was pretty damn cool and got the party atmosphere going. The next few hours following this are a blur of events that aren’t worth relating, mostly because they are forgotten. The next thing I remember was being somewhere by the sea front to witness a tired Dan Black play at half 2 in the morning. He was pretty entertaining to be fair but it didn’t matter at that hour, tired drinks were being drunk in the back room with tired people including the likes of, OIW favourite, Pete from the ace Exlovers.

Several drunken conversations later and around 5:30am the singer of Brighton band Riot, Riot offered up his digs to crash at along with some Gin, (cheers Dom!). That was pretty much my Great Escape, it kind of limped home I guess. I have no pictures and Saturday meant heading back to London for a friends charity party in Cavendish Square. I was chained to a dominatrix. So here’s my only picture of the weekend, and it’s a slightly disturbing one…

Josh Weller & Paloma Faith videos!

So here’s another appetite wetting taster for the next OIW (a Josh Weller “PUSH” EP launch none the less!) on May 6th at Madame Jo Jo’s!

Josh Weller and Paloma Faith, both performing on May 6th, collaborate on their own special version of Nelly and Kelly Rowland’s “Dilemma” as perhaps only they could…

Plus we had to feature this vid of Josh’s “She Can’t Quit Smoking”, partly because it’s ace and also because it’s directed by our pal and DJ for the launch night Mr Dave Depares. Go Dave!

May 6th, OIW @ Madame JoJo’s, Soho
Josh Weller (”Push” EP launch) + Paloma Faith + monsters (yes, really)
