The Violet May – Debut Single Out Through Oh! Inverted World Records On May 24th

The Violet May

“Electric and inspiring… their time is now.” – The Guardian

“Gargantuan stage presence and thunderous guitars… Familiarise yourself with these mugshots, for you will definitely be seeing a lot more of them this year. An electrifying live show” – Clash

“An immensely catchy and confident debut… Splendid!” – Rock City

Yep, exciting news from Oh! Inverted World towers, our next release will be
for The Violet May, releasing their hotly-anticipated debut single – the double-A side, ‘Bright or Better/This Crowd’ – on May 24th.

The single will be strictly limited to 500 copies of 7” vinyl, and widely available through all good digital stores. And as a taster of what’s to come for you good folks, here’s an exclusive track to download, Queen Teen.

Like that? Well wait until you hear the single ‘Bright or Better/This Crowd’, an urgent, high-octane statement of intent, marrying Queens of The Stone Age-esque guitars with the wry lyrical delivery of vocalist McClure.

The Violet May are already turning some important ears their way. Alan McGee declared the band one of his 15 Tips for 2010 in the Guardian. Then, upon hearing ‘Bright or Better’, former Jesus and Mary Chain band member Douglas Hart – who has previously directed videos for My Bloody Valentine, The Horrors and The Libertines – offered his directorial services to the band. Peter Stringfellow, who, like The Violet May, began his career in Sheffield (as a music promoter), was also first on the scene; providing both dancers – and the location, ‘Stringfellows’ – for the shoot. The result is an authentically dirty rock and roll video, to match the dirty rock and roll sound.

Both tracks on this release are reflective of the band’s formidable live show, which has seen them build up a fervent following back home in Sheffield, and gain headline residencies at the likes of London’s infamous Death Disco. They’ve also been championed by the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer on LA’s biggest radio station KROQ along with Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens giving early support to the band.

XFM, meanwhile, has hand-picked them to play their own stage at this year’s Secret Garden Party, with appearances at Leeds Festival, on top of Standon Calling all confirmed.

If you’re lucky enough to live in New York then you’ll also probably hear them in the US branch of Top Shop which has given heavy, unsolicited exposure to the band too. So, yes, exciting news folks, keep your eyes out for this one and we’ll bring you more info soon…

The Violet May are: Chris McClure (vocals); John Kubicki (keys, guitars, vocals); Jono How (guitar); Dan Booth (bass); Alan Whittaker (drums).
