Oh! Inverted World is back on June 21st with another showcase of the best new music around! And we also have an Oh! Inverted World DOUBLE birthday thrown into the mix this month (James is oooold, Tom is even oooolder, please bring along cake to cheer them both up).
Up this month we will have our second O!IW appearance from the ace BEAR DRIVER. Expect awesome tunes, sweeping melodies, and a hell of a show. Exciting!
Speaking of exciting, the hotly-tipped (and quite-rightly-so) SOUTHERN will also be on the bill. Made up of Belfast duo Thom and Lucy Southern, this band not only come with the O!IW “stamp of approval”, but have recently been picking up accolades from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and The Fly, as well as supporting The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Willy Mason amongst others. Nice.
And kicking things off for us will be the downright magnificent SEA STACKS, charming and wondrous, this is the kind of act that the Old Queens Head was made for.
So that all sounds pretty good, right? Throw in some quality DJ sets and the fact the night is FREE ENTRY (yep, it won’t cost you a penny) and how can you say no? We’d love to see you all on Thursday, June 21st. Here’s an event page too folks! OIW – JUNE 21st 2012
Oh! Inverted World returns to the Old Queens Head on May 24th with (as ever, obvs) an AMAZING line-up of Good Dangers, Amber States, Natalie Findlay and Golden Fable. You’d expect to pay good money for such quality, but no, IT’S TOTALLY FREE!
Here are Good Dangers cycling through woods in the dark (which is very dangerous, please don’t try at home kids, this could be a Bad Danger (haha, geddit?!))
Following the awesome boat show on Wednesday (and hell, that was a party!), OIW are going back to our home, The Old Queens Head in Angel, on Thursday (2nd December) for an early Xmas party with the incredible Cibelle Blackbird performing.
We’ve been trying to land the incredibly talented songstress for a show since around the time we started OIW, so it’s a joyous occasion that we have finally got her along on December 2nd.
Cibelle was actually born in Sao Paolo before becoming a Hackney-ite so she knows a thing or two about bringing some sunshine along too. If (like us) you’re already pretty fed up with the cold, minimal daylight hours, and miserable weather, here’s an archived video from Brazilian TV featuring Cibelle that should cheer you the hell up, it worked for us!
Oh, and did we mention that Cibelle’s backing band are actually La Shark! Yes, the band who hold the record for OIW shows (we really can’t get enough of them y’see). To move a bit closer to what you can expect on Dec 2nd, here is Cibelle’s version of Tom Waits’ Green Grass. The video for the track has already had over a million youtube hits and is simply luscious. Just like the lady herself.
Hola! It’s a big Wednesday this week as we bring you an OIW night like you’ve never seen before! In honour of the wonderful Superhumanoids being in the UK to support their “Urgency” EP (out on OIW Records) we are throwing a B.I.G. party on the Thames for them before they jet off back to L.A. It all kicks off from 7:30pm on the Tamesis Dock in Vauxhall and any pirate or sailor-related dressing up is definitely approved of. Full details HERE.
The guys will also be performing alongside two other top acts, Sunderbans and My Sad Captains, as well as Fabio Lendrum giving us an exclusive DJ set to get funky to. Back to My Sad Captains who are an OIW favourite ever since they played for us earlier in the year, they are simply wonderful and to prove the point here is one of their tracks to check out, fragile, beautiful, and the kind of tune that makes you want to hit “repeat” and wallow in. Take it away guys…
So yeah, he’s had a bunch of 5-star reviews calling him “utterly remarkable” (UNCUT), “fresh, vital, uncluttered and brilliant” (THE SUN), and had the likes of Beth Orten and Alan McGee shouting his praises, but Emit Bloch really is the real deal. I mean the guy grew up on a ranch in Utah and recorded his first album on a $6 dictaphone that has now surfaced through One Little Indian (who release Bjork amongst others!)… His songs give you that great feeling of hearing Woody Guthrie, Dylan or Hank Williams on a sunny day when you’re headed out on a drive in your piece of junk car with only a cassette player and no real idea where your going to go. Just drifting along…
Well, thankfully Emit is drifting onto the Oh! Inverted World stage at the Old Queens Head tonight (Thurs 17th June) along with the excellent Left With Pictures and Look, Stranger! Yep, it’s going to be fine evening, come join us and drop in for a beer or two over some great music. Doors around 7:30pm.
